For more than 30 years Jubilee has been an essential event on Homer Council on the Art’s calendar, and the tradition continues in 2019 with a new focus on visual arts. Originally, along with our traditional gallery exhibit, HCOA had planned to partner with local performing artists who would develop an original, student led storytelling-focused performance of “Jubilee: A Brand New Day.” However, because of recent unforeseen circumstance, we are not able to produce the Jubilee performance. This is a disappointment to many students and families, as well as HCOA board and staff that look forward to this annual event. While we are diverging from performance art—for this year—we are excited by the opportunity to direct our energy toward visual artwork by Homer’s talented youth. Jubilee has a long history of featuring excellent young artists whose work explores different media and comments on a wide range of subjects. We continue to feel honored to display these works, and look forward to seeing the new batch of submissions for this year’s exhibit.
Additionally, each individual who participates in the Jubilee gallery exhibit will be eligible for the HCOA Fine Arts Scholarship; applications will be available on our website February 1, 2019. One of HCOA’s priorities is to nurture young artists as they continue on their creative paths, and our scholarship is a wonderful opportunity to do just that. Join us for first Friday in March to see (and jubilate in!) all of the visual artwork that will be featured.
