SPICED HAM: THE ART OF SPAMALOT
By Jennifer Norton
with Lynne Burt, Marie Walker, Judy Wynn, Mary Fries, and Cassie Brooks
A visual exploration of the musical Spamalot with ink drawings by Jennifer Norton and items from Pier One Theatre's 2018 production. This whimsical collection of illustrations, along with original costumes and props from the show, offers insight into the director's experience and an up-close look at the craftsmanship and artistry of collaborative theatrical design.
In the artist’s words: Last summer I was privileged to direct Spamalot by Eric Idle and John Du Prez at Pier One Theatre with my co-creators Mark Robinson, Jill Berryman and Breezy Berryman. The visual aspects of the show have been on my mind since. I had the immense pleasure of working with a team of artists who created the costumes and props required for the show. While the audience did get to see those costumes and props, they went winging by so fast, I am certain they did not really get a chance to see the craftsmanship and artistry that went into each piece. The show on display here at Homer Council on the Arts is a combination of the work created for that show and my own drawings reflecting on the experience. My drawings are all done in ink on beepaper. It has been so fun to revisit the characters created by community actors. The art of theatre is truly a collaboration, and my own personal art is continually inspired and fueled by that collaborative art.
The drawings in this show were all created late at night. During the day, I am a bookseller at the Homer Bookstore, Artistic Director of Pier One Theatre, Artistic Director of the Homer Nutcracker, wife of a water taxi captain, and mother of a three year old son. It is a wonderful and full life.
Norton was named Artist of the Year in 2018 by Homer Council on the Arts.
