About the Musician's...

Michael Murray – Music Bio Sort of

1st guitar Airline $12 –Montgomery Wards along with motorcycle jacket and engineer boots all delivered by Santa in Gallup, New Mexico in the late 50’s. Since it didn’t play itself nothin’ much happened until I lived on the campus of Flandreau Indian School and one of the Byrd Brothers taught me a real simple lick aka Duane Eddie / Sandy Nelson (Nelson is a drummer but had a simple guitar riff along with his great percussion).

I took the licks with me to a boarding school in Minnesota for 9th grade and was able to learn enough (self taught) to play a couple songs in a talent show the end of the year. I had convinced my dad I needed an electric by then and I got a Supro and a used Airline amp. The guitar had a neck that I compared to a shaved log (ie thick).

When I arrived in public school for the rest of my high school years I joined folk and rock groups and learned a little about reading music and singing in choir. My buddies and I started making some money playing in bars and for high school and community dances, which I continued to do even into college years.

When I signed up to teach in Alaska they told me I might not have electricity so I sold my electric and bought a Gibson J-45 and flew to the village of Quinhagak.

Mostly I used my guitar and singing to work with children and or an occasional song at a church or fund-raiser. I played with a couple groups in Bethel, Alaska while I was a principal there. In Homer I have been mostly playing and singing at church and more recently at the Friendship Center. Guitar playing and singing are hobbies I guess that I do because I like to. I also sang with the community choir here under the direction of Mark Robinson. This was truly a wonderful experience and pushed me to accomplish much more than I ever would have on my own.

I tend to collect instruments for some reason and now have several guitars, ukuleles, mandolins, autoharps, harmonicas, a banjo, dobro, and assorted sound effects none of which I have mastered. I love going to bars and other places to hear musicians and draw or paint images of them while they are playing.

Steve Mueller and I started playing together now and then in church and he led me into playing at the Friendship Center where we just had a lot of fun playing songs people there remembered (and some they didn’t) and telling a few jokes in between.

Music brings joy to our lives and we hope we can share some of that as Vitamin D(uh) “bringing a little sunshine into the dark days of the Homer winter.”
