DRIFT...
Buoys around the Bay
A Flotsam and Jetsam Art Tour

Vision:

Drift... hopes to challenge visual artists to create using buoys collected from Alaskan beaches. Through this community art project, the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies hopes to inspire residents and visitors to Homer to contemplate the connection between themselves and the marine environment as they view the outdoor installations around town. Perhaps, even, as we view the buoys that have been transformed by artists, we might call to mind how the buoys drifted to shore, our impact on marine habitats, and our power to protect it.

Drift... is supported by the NOAA Community-Based Marine Debris Clean-Up and Prevention Grant Program

Materials:

The artist may select up to 10 buoys from those collected from beaches in Alaska. The artist shall select all art materials. Artists may use any medium and are not restricted to paint. The materials should withstand normal wear and tear and continuous exposure to outdoor elements, including people touching the piece. Artists will produce their designs in their homes or studios. They can paint, sculpt, transform, or adorn the buoys to complete their design, but the structural integrity of the buoy must remain intact. When attaching objects to the surface, please do so in a permanent manner.

Guidelines:

1. The audience for Drift... is the general public of all ages. Designs should be appropriate for public display for an audience of varied gender and age. Corporate logos or advertising will not be accepted.

2. Designs must be made for outdoor display. By submitting artwork, the artist agrees that their work may end up in any of the participating locations.

3. Drift... is a community celebration of art where individuals are invited to touch and experience the art pieces while they are displayed throughout the Kachemak Bay area. Please keep durability and public safety in mind when designing.

4. Objects may be attached to the buoys, but these objects must adhere to all above guidelines. Objects must be attached in such a way that they cannot be easily removed.

5. At the end of Drift..., each piece may be purchased with payment split between the artist and the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies.

Ownership:

The buoys are property of the artist until sale or auction when they will become property of the highest bidder. Auction will be held at the 2010 CoastWalk Kick-Off Event.

Recognition:

Art will be placed on display at sites in the Kachemak Bay Area for public viewing from May to September 2010. The artist's name, the name of the piece and information on Marine Debris will be displayed near each Buoy Art. Artists will also be recognized in various printed materials, media events, on the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies website, and at the Drift... First Friday Reception, June 4, 2010 at the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies Headquarters in Homer, Alaska.
