Susan Johnson: Here and There
First Friday opening reception 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 5
Exhibit runs May 5-May 30

Artist Statement:

When my daughter moved to Anchorage in 2006, the annual journey North helped to reignite my interest with the other side of the lens. After a life long career in the darkroom, I finally made the switch to shooting digital on one of our many Alaskan Road Trips.

The size and scope of the landscape Here, has a tendency to make one feel small, but at the same time serves to enlarge the soul. The crowded, urban landscape There, can make one feel even smaller, crushing the heart and soul over time. I knew I needed to get out, and relocate to a place where I could regain my soul and a better sense of purpose.

Yet even in the city, there are hidden bits of nature to be found. The scope may be smaller, but the beauty is still there. You just have to slow down and look a little harder. My frequent journeys to Alaska made me want to seek out that simple beauty There, holding me over until I could return to a nearly effortless search Here.

This show is a collection of landscapes, exploring both urban and wild settings, with all of them celebrating the glory and wonder of the nature that surrounds us, wherever we are, Here or There.
