Youth Programming

Events

Classes, workshops, contests, exhibition and performance opportunities are offered to schoolchildren through out the school year, both after school and during the day for homeschooling students, during spring break and summer vacation. Classes range from weekly art and theater classes, weeklong art workshops, to an ongoing Emerging Performers Program.

Youth Summer ArtQuest Workshops are offered June through August, for ages 0-18. Workshops during the summer of 2012 range from music for the very young, visual art for the young and for teens to and circus arts for all ages.

September through May visual art (ArtQuest) and theater classes are offered during the week. TheaterShakes September-November and a Musical Theatre Program February - May of 2110.

The Emerging Performers Program is dedicated to developing performance skills with the support of peers and mentors. This program will be integrated into the Musical Theatre Program for 2012.

Every year, all students are invited to participate in the Annual Kenai Peninsula Writers Contest, with submission due in November and public readings by the winners in March.

Every spring break, HCOA offers a weeklong workshop. Radio Theater was offered in 2010, and "Art and Nature" was offered in 2011 in collaboration with the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies.

April is dedicated to Youth Art. Visual art is exhibited in the Homer Council on the Arts Gallery as well as in other public spaces throughout Homer. The month culminates with the Jubilee Performing Arts Show at the Mariner Theater. Proceeds support the Youth Fine Arts Scholarship Program.

During the summer, weeklong art classes are offered from drawing, creative writing to puppetry and crochete.

Workshops are offered throughout the year on weekends.
